Today more and more people are turning to tooth whitening procedures to reverse the effects of aging and staining caused by food and tobacco. But, only your dentist can tell you whether a whitening procedure will be effective for you.

If you are a candidate, we suggest two types of whitening procedures:
• ZOOM is an in-office whitening procedure that is done chair side and usually requires a 1-11/2 hour visit. During this procedure, a rubber shield is applied to protect the soft tissues in your mouth. A whitening agent is then applied to the teeth and a special light is used to enhance the action of the agent. Custom whitening trays are provided for touch up whitening when needed.

• Take Home Whitening Trays: A custom mouth guard is created to fit your mouth perfectly. The patient is educated about the dispensing of gel that is placed in the guard and then in the mouth for a predetermined time period (usually 1-2 hours a day for 2 weeks, depending on the condition of your teeth).

Whitening toothpastes sold commercially can be somewhat effective in removing stains and brightening teeth. However, many of these products have abrasive substances that can actually wear away your tooth’s enamel. Whitening agents and strips actually change the color of your teeth but are only effective on certain types of stains. These agents are not as effective on brownish and grayish stains, pitted or badly discolored teeth or restorations such as crowns, bridges, bonding and tooth-colored fillings.

Because whitening products contain peroxide, teeth can become sensitive during the period when you are using the whitening solution. In many cases, this sensitivity is temporary and should lessen once the treatment is finished.

Professional whitening performed by our office is considered to be the most effective and safest method. Done properly and maintained regularly, tooth whitening can last as long as five years and will keep your smile glowing.
